Rimrock Overlook Fall Hike

Let's adventure!

Cosmos' Lounge is headed to Rimrock Overlook to take a hike! This day trip is open to teens grades 6–12 and includes everything you need for a day of fall hiking.

What we'll be doing

We'll hike the Rimrock Trail in the Allegheny National Forest, a 2.3-mile out-and-back trail rated as a moderate hike with about 472 feet of elevation gain, taking roughly an hour to an hour and a half to complete. The trail runs from Kinzua Beach up to Rimrock Overlook, passing through heavily forested terrain that's mostly level to gradually sloped, with the last stretch near the overlook becoming steeper. At the top, hikers are rewarded with panoramic views of the Allegheny Reservoir. This is one of the most scenic and most popular overlooks in the whole national forest, especially with fall color on the hillsides. The steeper sections near the top mean sturdy shoes and a bit of stamina are a must, but overall this is a manageable hike for a mixed group of ages and fitness levels.

Why we're going

There's a real payoff to this hike you put in the climb, and the reward is one of the best views in the entire Allegheny National Forest. Getting teens out on a trail like this builds stamina, teamwork, and the satisfaction of finishing something that took real effort. It's also a chance to see a part of our own region that a lot of teens have never explored, right in their backyard. That's exactly what Cosmos' mission is about: giving teens new experiences that build confidence and independence, one trail at a time.

Trip Date: October 25, 2026

Departure/Return: Leaves from Cosmos' Lounge at 12:00 PM, returns in the evening around 4:30 PM

Safety first

All Cosmos' Lounge staff and chaperones hold current PA child care clearances and CPR certification. Because we can't guarantee that every parent or guardian on a trip would have the same clearances, parents are not able to join this trip — this keeps things safe and consistent for every teen in the group.
