What Does "Youth-Driven" Mean?
At Cosmos’ Lounge, being youth-driven means young people are not just participants — they are active partners in shaping the space, the programs, and the decisions that affect their lives.
The Youth-Driven Space (YDS) approach is designed to:
-
Increase youth engagement and buy-in
-
Build confidence and develop social-emotional skills
-
Strengthen program quality and relevance
-
Prepare young people to participate meaningfully in their communities and in society
Rather than separating “programming” from “leadership,” YDS uses real roles within the program, organization, and decision-making process as opportunities for teens to build skills, ownership, and a sense of purpose.
When young people are trusted with responsibility, engagement deepens — and participation becomes meaningful, not performative.
Youth–Adult Partnership at the Core
Youth-Driven Spaces foster a culture of youth–adult partnership, where power is shared rather than held solely by adults.
At Cosmos:
-
Adults don’t step away — they step alongside
-
Teens are supported, mentored, and trusted to lead
-
Youth perspectives genuinely shape decisions that impact the space
This shared approach allows young people’s lived experiences, ideas, and leadership to guide the direction of Cosmos in authentic ways.

Our Youth-Driven Values
🤝 Relationships
We are a relationship-centered space. Trust, communication, and mutual respect are the foundation of everything we do. We create opportunities for youth and adults to show up as their authentic selves — listening deeply, speaking honestly, and learning together.
⚖️ Equity
Youth-driven work is rooted in equity. We recognize the impact of adultism and other inequities and commit to practices that amplify youth voice, honor intersectional identities, and ensure transparency and fairness in how decisions are made.
🌱 Community
We believe community is built through connection, shared purpose, and belonging. Cosmos is intentionally designed to be a space where everyone feels valued and accepted, and where young people can grow both individually and collectively.
What That Looks Like
Being youth-driven at Cosmos means:
-
Teens take on leadership and advisory roles
-
Youth help design and lead programs and events
-
Adults act as partners, mentors, and supporters
-
The space evolves based on youth voice and community needs
Cosmos isn’t just a place for teens — it’s a place built with them.
Why This Matters
Youth-driven spaces create environments where teens feel:
-
Seen
-
Trusted
-
Capable
-
Connected
And when that happens, confidence grows, community strengthens, and young people are empowered to shape both their future — and the future of the place they call home.
